How to Lower Downtime in Filtration Systems with Custom Wedge Wire Screens

Filtration system downtime commonly develops from screen blinding, rising differential pressure, and declining flow rate. Custom wedge wire screens address these problems through controlled slot geometry and welded support construction.

Why Does Filtration System Downtime Often Start at the Screen?

If the slot opening does not match particle-size distribution or solids loading, retained material can reduce effective open area and raise pressure drop. Material mismatch can also shorten screen service life through corrosion or wear.

Clogging and Flow Restriction

A continuous slot screen uses parallel V-shaped surface wires resistance-welded to support rods. The slot is narrowest at the process face and widens downstream, reducing particle wedging during backwashing or scraper cleaning. This non-blinding geometry supports an anti-clogging filter screen.

At Jingzhou Metal, we manufacture the V-shaped profile wire used in this structure, allowing profile geometry and dimensional control to enter the process before screen welding.

How Does a Custom Wedge Wire Screen Work?

A custom wedge wire screen combines surface-wire profile, support-rod section and pitch, slot opening, flow direction, and overall dimensions. Flat panels, curved screens, cylinders, baskets, and nozzles use the same filtration principle.

Key Construction Parameters

ParameterAvailable Reference
MaterialSS304, SS304L, SS316, SS316L; higher alloys by design
Slot Opening0.02 to 5 mm
Width25 to 1200 mm
LengthUp to 6 m
Support Rod2.30, 3.00, 3.30, 3.70 mm
Profile Wire2.20 to 7.00 mm options

Our custom profile sections cover 0.5 × 1.0 mm to 5 × 10 mm, with profile-wire dimensional tolerance down to ±0.01 mm. That tolerance applies to the profile wire, not automatically to finished slot tolerance.

Which Design Choices Help Reduce Downtime?

Wedge wire screen slot size alone cannot define filtration performance. Wedge wire screen open area, surface-wire width, support pitch, material grade, allowable differential pressure, and cleaning method must work as one design.

Slot Size, Open Area, and Material

Smaller slots retain finer particles but may blind faster under high solids loading. Greater open area can increase hydraulic capacity, while insufficient support may reduce stiffness. Nominal open area can be calculated as slot width ÷ (slot width + surface-wire width) × 100; supports, frames, weld zones, and end fittings reduce the effective value.

A stainless steel wedge wire screen commonly uses 304, 304L, 316, or 316L. Duplex stainless steel and C-276 nickel-molybdenum-chromium alloy are available for more severe corrosion conditions. Cylindrical constructions can use outside-to-inside or inside-to-outside flow, including rerolled designs for self-cleaning and screw-press filters.

Where Are Wedge Wire Screens Used?

Wedge wire screen applications include solid-liquid separation, dewatering, media retention, and process screening. Screen form should follow the duty.

Common Industrial Filtration Duties

Flat screens serve fine or heavy-duty separation. Curved screens suit continuous solid-liquid separation. Cylindrical screens support water treatment, oil and gas sand control, and self-cleaning filtration. Baskets and nozzles also serve mining, food processing, brewing, and pulp and paper systems.

How Should a Custom Wedge Wire Screen Be Specified?

A technical RFQ should define particle-size distribution, solids concentration, flow rate, fluid chemistry, temperature, differential pressure, cleaning method, flow direction, slot opening, wedge wire screen material grade, dimensions, and end fittings.

Manufacturing and Quality Checks That Matter

Our profile-wire route starts with wire rod, cold drawing, round-wire annealing, shaped rolling, a second annealing stage, and fine drawing. Fine drawing controls dimensional accuracy and surface finish; it is not a surface-treatment process.

The profile then enters screen fabrication, where surface wires are positioned at controlled spacing and resistance-welded to support rods. Cylindrical designs may require winding or rerolling before dimensional and slot inspection.

Jingzhou Metal connects these stages through in-house wire drawing, mold development and repair, 1D/2D projection measurement, infrared monitoring, spectrometer analysis, and tensile testing. Our profile-wire data lists 1,200 tons per month capacity, while new-product R&D typically takes 7 to 15 days. This supports repeat OEM/ODM orders.

What Supplier Capabilities Help Keep Filtration Running Longer?

A custom wedge wire screen manufacturer adds more value when profile production, tooling, welding, and inspection operate as one control chain. We manage profile development and quality control in-house, connecting slot consistency with upstream wire geometry and reducing dependence on separate profile-wire sourcing.

From Profile Wire to Custom Screen Design

Jingzhou Metal’s wedge wire screen range supports custom dimensions and screen forms. Drawing-based development covers slot geometry, surface-wire profile, support configuration, flow direction, and end details for replacement and non-standard filtration projects.

FAQ

Q1: Is ±0.01 mm Profile-Wire Tolerance the Same as Finished Slot Tolerance?
A: No. Profile-wire dimensional tolerance and welded slot tolerance are separate acceptance criteria.

Q2: When Should a Cylindrical Screen Use Outside-to-Inside or Inside-to-Outside Flow?
A: Flow direction depends on solids retention, scraper or backwash arrangement, structural loading, and screen construction. Rerolled cylinders can support inside-to-outside duty.

Q3: What Data Is Needed to Calculate Wedge Wire Screen Open Area?
A: Nominal open area requires slot width and surface-wire width. Effective open area must also account for supports, frames, weld zones, and end fittings.

Q4: When May 316L Be Insufficient?
A: High chloride concentration, aggressive chemicals, or stress-corrosion risk may justify duplex stainless steel, C-276 nickel-molybdenum-chromium alloy, or another higher-alloy material.

Q5: Can an Existing Screen Be Developed from an Approved Drawing?
A: Yes. Our OEM/ODM process can develop custom profile wire, slot geometry, support configuration, dimensions, and end details from drawings or technical specifications.
