Wedge Wire Screen Construction and Applications

A wedge wire screen uses parallel V-shaped surface profile wires welded to support rods. The narrow opening controls separation, while the widening geometry below reduces particle wedging. Forms include panels, cylinders, drums, baskets, and nozzles for water treatment, oil and gas, mining, food processing, and pulp and paper.

Unlike woven wire cloth, a stainless steel wedge wire screen is defined by continuous slot width, profile-wire geometry, support-rod spacing, and flow direction.

Definition of Wedge Wire Screen Slot Tolerance

Wedge wire screen tolerance is the allowable variation around the nominal finished slot. For critical separation, one reading is insufficient; useful inspection data include mean, minimum, maximum, and slot distribution across the sampling area.

Profile Wire Tolerance Versus Finished Slot Tolerance

Our wedge/profile wire range covers 0.5 × 1.0 mm to 5 × 10 mm, with ±0.01 mm dimensional tolerance for the wire cross-section. This is not the finished wedge wire slot opening tolerance.

Finished-slot accuracy also depends on wire pitch, feed consistency, positioning, tension, support-rod spacing, welding energy, and thermal distortion. Because we produce profile wire in-house, geometry can be verified before welding.

Why Relative Tolerance Matters

A ±0.01 mm variation around a 0.10 mm slot is proportionally much larger than the same deviation around 1.00 mm. Slot tolerance therefore needs to match retention risk and hydraulic requirements.

Open Area (%) = Slot ÷ (Slot + Profile Wire Width) × 100

For parallel-slot geometry, wedge wire screen open area changes with slot width and surface profile-wire width.

Slot control begins with profile-wire production: wire rod, cold drawing, round-wire annealing, shaped rolling, second annealing, and fine drawing. Cold drawing improves dimensional control; annealing restores ductility and reduces residual stress; shaped rolling forms the V-profile; fine drawing stabilizes final dimensions and surface finish.
