Hygienic separation with wedge wire technology

Wedge wire screens are continuous-slot filtration components manufactured by resistance-welding profiled surface wires to support rods. The triangular wire profile creates a narrow slot at the process surface and a wider passage below it. This geometry supports stable particle retention, low pressure loss, and effective solids release during backwashing or mechanical cleaning.

Filtration performance depends on slot width, open area, wire profile, support spacing, flow direction, and weld integrity. Slot width should therefore be selected from process data rather than from mesh appearance alone. Fluid viscosity, temperature, solids loading, target flow rate, and allowable differential pressure all influence the final screen design.

Brewery and beverage clarification

Wedge wire cylinders and panels serve lauter tuns, wort clarification systems, beer polishing units, and beverage prefiltration. These structures trap grain particles, hop residues, and filter-aid elements. Concurrently, they secure a stable, defined flow path.

For a lauter screen, the slot orientation and support arrangement are selected according to the direction of product flow and the expected solids load. A larger open area may reduce pressure loss, but excessive opening can reduce retention or weaken the screen structure. Dairy and liquid-food filtration

Wedge wire components aid curd retention and whey clarification. They also manage sugar-syrup filtration, removing suspended-solids from sauces, extracts, and process water. The stainless-steel build delivers robust mechanical strength. Additionally, it resists corrosion throughout frequent cleaning cycles.

Surface finish and surface treatment remain distinct technical parameters. Finish outlines the measured roughness and physical state of the product-contact area. Treatment, conversely, involves specific post-fabrication procedures. These include mechanical polishing, passivation, or electropolishing. A polished face does not guarantee prior passivation. Therefore, you must independently specify and verify each requirement.

Fruit, vegetable, and starch processing

Sieve bends, rotary screens, static panels, and cylindrical screens are used to separate pulp, peel, fiber, starch, and process liquor. Sieve-bend screens use gravity and tangential feed to dewater or classify material without a rotating drive. Rotary screens are selected when continuous transport, washing, or discharge is required.

Screen angle, feed velocity, support pitch, and discharge configuration must correspond to solids concentration and particle behavior. Correct coordination limits blinding, reduces product loss, and maintains consistent throughput.

The production workflow includes:

  1. We verify material grade, coil identity, wire diameter, straightness, surface condition, and mass before forming. Material certificates are matched with the production order.
  2. We draw and profile the wire according to the approved section. Profile dimensions and surface defects are checked with calibrated inspection tools.
  3. We set the welding line for slot pitch, support spacing, panel dimensions, and frame geometry. First-off samples are inspected before batch production continues.
  4. After welding, we inspect slot openings, weld continuity, deformation, burrs, discoloration, blocked slots, and frame alignment.
  5. Straightness is checked on a reference plane. For applicable wire products, 80–100 cm sections are placed on a flat surface, and corner inclination and straightness are recorded; the specified deviation is controlled within the approved limit.
  6. After confirmation, the line operates under controlled tension. Finished screens receive dimensional inspection before packing.
  7. Operators perform visual checks at least once per hour for damage, deformation, discoloration, edge defects, and missing material. Finished dimensions are recorded before release.

When required by the drawing or hygienic specification, we mechanically polish, passivate, or electropolish the product-contact surface. These operations follow separate acceptance criteria and do not replace dimensional or weld inspection.

A technically complete selection normally includes fluid composition, temperature, viscosity, solids size, solids concentration, required flow rate, cleaning chemicals, cleaning temperature, pressure limits, installation orientation, connection standard, material grade, slot width, and surface-finish requirement.

FAQ

How does a wedge wire screen behave with fibrous solids?
Fibers may bridge across narrow openings or form a surface cake. Retention therefore depends on fiber length, flexibility, concentration, flow direction, and cleaning conditions. Pilot testing or operating data is advisable when fibrous material is dominant.

When is electropolishing appropriate?
Electropolishing is considered when the specification requires lower roughness, reduced product adhesion, or improved corrosion resistance after passivation. The requirement should identify a roughness target and treatment standard rather than relying only on the phrase “food grade.”

Can wedge wire replace a cartridge filter?
A cleanable metal screen may replace a cartridge filter when the required particle retention, contaminant load, pressure drop, and cleaning cycle are compatible with wedge wire construction. Validation should compare retention, differential pressure, cleaning effectiveness, and service life.

Which documents usually accompany delivery?
Typical records include material certificates, dimensional inspection results, slot measurements, weld inspection records, surface-treatment details, and packing information. The exact documentation package is defined by the process owner or equipment integrator.
